In this 48hourslogo logo designer interview series, we discover how SergioLopez likes to unwind, where he sees himself as a designer in a year, and what advice he has for anyone considering starting a logo contest.
Just below the capitol city of Portugal, Lisbon, is a municipality called Seixal. It was known in the 18th century as a vacation spot, and known today being near the Avante! Music Festival. But we know it as home to Sergio Lopez, one of our amazing logo designers.
Paulo Sergio Lopes Ventura has grown up and lived in Seixal all his life. At thirty one years old, he shares his life with his girlfriend Patricia. They work together in a children’s association. In his young age, Paulo has become fluent in Portuguese, English, and some Spanish. How did he get into logo design? What brings him to 48hourslogo.com?
Here’s what I discussed with SergioLopez:
I’d like to get to know you a little bit, so what kinds of hobbies do you have when you’re not designing?
I like TV series like Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and The Wire. I’m into movies like Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, and Training Day. I love to ride my bike and explore the beautiful places in my country, sometimes with my girlfriend, other times alone. I need to breathe the nature to get focus and be strong for my daily routines.
Awesome! What types of music do you listen to?
I like hip hop and african music. Also house music at night clubs.
What are some of your favorite things to do?
If the weather’s cold, a good movie in good company in a Sunday afternoon is a must! If it’s hot outside, I’ll make my own movie outdoors!
I bet that’s entertaining 🙂 So what are some of your least favorite things?
My least favorite thing to do is leave projects unfinished. I like to see things through until the end.
Now for super powers – you get one of your choosing. What would it be?
The Flash! I would choose speed because I love the idea of going fast. Then I can enter forty logo contests a day! LOL! I wish 🙂 Jaize already has that power though, hahaha!
He is speedy! Anything in your refrigerator that you’re looking forward to having?
Pizza and lasagna! I love italian food!
What do you think your life will be like a year from now?
Actually, I have a part time job in a children’s association, and I do the most I can at 48hourslogo. It is difficult to predict the future, but I would love to see myself gaining and learning more knowledge in a good company.
So Patricia – how did you two meet? What was that like?
Patricia was my neighbor since we were children. We lived on the same street, studied in the same school. We began a relationship when I was fifteen years old.
Let’s say someone’ writing your biography, what would you recommend as the title?
Sergio Lopez – No Rules For Imagination
The title says all.

So how did you become a graphic designer?
My journey in design started when a friend asked me if I could do a CD cover for a music demo. That was around nine years ago. I liked what I had done with the CD cover, and I haven’t stopped since then. In 2009 I studied and took a school course for multimedia and design.
Are there any strong influences that guide your design process?
Symbolism, composition, and color palettes.
Name your Top 3 Fonts and what you love about them.
- Impact – it’s a bold font, yet easy to read.
- Futura – for its elegance and simplicity.
- Helvetica – always a good option too.
Are you drawn to any certain types of contests?
I love contests when the client asks me to make connections with fonts and unique symbols. But I do all kinds!
Describe your surroundings when you design, what’s it like?
Beer, some snacks like peanuts, cashews, and fried corn, and music. Otherwise, when I’m designing a logo, I disconnect from the environment around me. I just focus on perfection!
What advice do you have for the rookie designers out there?
Being a designer is all about transferring your imagination to the paper and screen. So brain stimulation and inspiration is 90% of the job well done. Take your time for inspiration, and the rest will come in time.
If you could speak to a business owner starting a contest, what advice would you give them?
Good and clear information is the key.
How would you explain Logo Design in three sentences or less?
Simplicity and clarity.

What was it like before joining 48hourslogo? How did you find the site?
I was working freelance and in a “khapaz,” a children’s association. It involves social work for the Cultural Association of Young African Descendants. I still do both. But over two years ago I had been searching Google looking for design contests, 48hourslogo was the first one that grabbed my attention.
Why do you like 48hourslogo.com?
It was the first site I had tried, loved it and have never left! They have a very honest and straight team.
How has your life changed since joining up with 48hourslogo?
I love what I do, and I love doing it through 48hourslogo. The competition is amazing, keeps me trying to always do better. I have learned a lot here, and still do. It’s a pleasure, thank you to 48hourslogo for this great opportunity!
